French innkeeper fined over Muslim headscarf demand

A French court on Tuesday fined a guesthouse owner who refused to give a room to a woman wearing a Muslim headscarf unless she removed it in common areas.

Found guilty of religious discrimination, Yvette Truchelut, 54, was handed a suspended four month prison sentence and fined 1,000 euros ($1409). She will have to pay a total of 7,400 euros to the plaintiff and rights groups that brought the action.

Horia Demiati, who is of Moroccan origin, came to the guesthouse in eastern France in August 2006 with her mother, who was also wearing a headscarf, and other members of her family.

Fairfax: I say, Carstairs, two men with ducks on their heads have just walked into the public convenience. What do you make of that?

Carstairs: They're probably freemasons.

Muslim sues Abercrombie Kids over headscarf

The Oklahoma chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-OK) announced today that it has filed an EEOC complaint on behalf of a Muslim woman who was allegedly denied employment at an Abercrombie Kids store in that state because of the applicant's religiously-mandated headscarf, or hijab.

The woman told CAIR-OK that a district manager claimed he could not hire her because her Islamic headscarf "does not fit the Abercrombie image."

"Employers have a clear legal duty to accommodate the religious practices of their workers," said CAIR-OK Executive Director Razi Hashmi. "To deny someone employment because of apparent religious bias goes against long-standing American traditions of tolerance and inclusion."

Former Employee Sues Walt Disney World Over Dress Code

Wearing a hijab has meant not being able to work at Walt Disney World, according to a former employee who claims she lost her job because she refused to remove her Muslim head scarf...

Disney policy prohibits the wearing of anything but Disney-issued hats and visors... Disney offered to accommodate her religious attire with a "backstage" job out of the public view, the lawsuit states...

What Disney workers wear has been regulated meticulously since Disneyland opened in 1955 to produce what is now marketed as the Disney experience.

"A big part of that show is you, with your quick smile, your eagerness to help and your willingness to maintain the Disney Look that our guests have come to associate with our very special brand," Walt Disney World Resort president Al Weiss wrote in the current employee handbook. "Each of you has helped uphold our heritage in so many ways, such as through your commitment to the Disney Look."

Everything from the socks on their feet to chewing gum, frowning in public and the cut of their hair is spelled out for the theme parks' 70,000 employees. But the resulting beard-free image conflicts with the distinctive religious attire and grooming practices for devout followers of Islam, Judaism and some other religions...

A sales clerk wearing a religious scarf should not disrupt anyone's Disney experience, according to the American-Arab Anti Discrimination Committee.

"I'm guessing she's not dressed as Snow White, just wearing the standard Walt Disney uniform," said Leila Al-Qatami, a spokeswoman for the organization. "I don't think it [the hijab] impairs or in any way detracts from a person's experience at Disney World, and so our organization believes that you should make accommodations for religious clothing."

Muslim stylist wins £4,000 payout

The owner of a hair salon has been ordered to pay £4,000 compensation to a Muslim stylist who was turned down for a job because she wears a headscarf.

Bushra Noah accused Sarah Desrosiers of religious discrimination when she failed to offer her a job at her Wedge salon in King's Cross, central London...

Ms Desrosiers said she needed stylists to showcase alternative hairstyles ...

Ms Desrosiers told the tribunal she was surprised it had not been mentioned earlier and expected her staff to reflect the "funky, urban" image of her salon ...

Speaking after the ruling the salon owner said: "I never in a million years dreamt that somebody would be completely against the display of hair and be in this industry. I don't feel I deserve it."...

The power that controls our world

How many times have I said that liberalism is against the existence of any particular and distinct thing, because as long as that thing exists in its particularity, it is maintaining its distinctness from--and hence is discriminating against and is excluding--all that is not like itself? Here is a hair dressing salon. It is devoted to "alternative, funky" hairstyles. Yet it is punished, with a very large fine, for not hiring an individual whose very presence in the salon as a hair dresser would contradict the very nature of that salon.

Under liberalism, nothing (if it is of the West) is allowed to be itself.

She alleged that when she told the director she had decided to start wearing a hijab (headscarf) to work, the director reacted negatively, made various offensive comments about Muslims and said that the centre might lose business as the parents would not like it. The woman said she was not offered any more shifts at the centre...

Many Muslim women felt that wearing the hijab deterred potential employers.

I'm a qualified dental technician and it was really hard for me to get employment with my scarf. I applied for a position at a dental laboratory and the boss, well we talked on the phone and everything was ok. When he saw me for the first time he was shocked. But I had all the qualifications and experience, and I got employment for two weeks. Then he told me I was a really good and hard worker but that I could not continue being employed there unless I take off that scarf ...I asked him 'Are there any other reasons why you wouldn't give me this job?' He said 'No. You're a really nice person and a hard worker but I don't want to bring religion into my laboratory'.

Some women felt they had to bow to pressure from employers and remove their hijab so as to secure employment.

I was unemployed for about two years. Every job that I would go to I know that I've got the skills ... it would really, really surprise me to get a phone call telling me that I didn't got the job. I was thinking to myself, why? I know that I'm fit, that I can do this job. I know that I'm the best person for it. I automatically knew the reason. Three months later, when I took it [the hijab] off, I automatically got a job ... to find work this is what I had to do ...

Employer pressure on Muslim women not to wear the hijab at work was reported to be especially acute in service industries where client contact is an essential part of the job. For example, a young Muslim woman working in an Adelaide pharmacy was told by her employer that she was not allowed to wear her hijab to work. 'I just wear my uniform, put my hijab on. When I get there [work] I take it off, go to work, and as soon as I leave I put it back on.' ... A receptionist in a Melbourne real estate agency was threatened with dismissal by her employer's wife who said, 'Don't come anymore unless you change the scarf'...

Many Muslim women working in fields such as law and medicine felt that employers and colleagues saw them as less intellectually capable or professionally committed compared with other staff if they wore traditional Islamic dress...

A number of participants described law firms as being among those who use the hijab as an excuse for refusing to employ Muslim women.

They would never employ you in a commercial law firm with the hijab ... I've actually had people tell me, 'You take that [i.e. the hijab] off and you can come' ...

A human right to freedom of expression?
Or a totalitarian principle of non-discrimination that will destroy everything distinctive about the Western world?

Tony Blair yesterday claimed the spate of knife and gun murders in London was not being caused by poverty, but a distinctive black culture ...

... Blair said the recent violence should not be treated as part of a general crime wave, but as specific to black youth. He said people had to drop their political correctness and recognise that the violence would not be stopped "by pretending it is not young black kids doing it" ...

... the prime minister admitted he had been "lurching into total frankness" in the final weeks of his premiership ...

Mr Blair said he had been moved to make his controversial remarks after speaking to a black pastor of a London church at a Downing Street knife crime summit, who said: "When are we going to start saying this is a problem amongst a section of the black community and not, for reasons of political correctness, pretend that this is nothing to do with it?" Mr Blair said there needed to be an "intense police focus" on the minority of young black Britons behind the gun and knife attacks ...

Another white family desolated

Here's another white person, police officer Andrew Widman of Fort Myers, Florida, a father of three, murdered on a whim by one of the innumerable Negro savages whom we allow to roam about at liberty in our society... Widman, patrolling Fort Myers' night club district, saw Abel Arango hassling his girlfriend outside a club. The officer intervened, and Arango pulled out a gun and shot Widman in the face, killing him. Officers then chased Abel, he fired at them, and they killed him ...

Is it racist, i.e., is it morally wrong, to speak of "Negro savages who are roaming about at liberty in our society"? No ...

Indeed, I am acting according to the Kantian categorical imperative, speaking the way I think everyone should speak. If our whole society began to declare plainly that predatory black savages are running loose among us and that this is totally unacceptable, then we would start to do something about it, and many innocent people, white and black, would be saved, and many families, white and black, would not be destroyed. But so long as the reality of this race-specific savagery is daintily covered up, society will remain passive and helpless, absorbing one black murder after another, forever.

Civilization is the opposite of savagery. Therefore part of what defines civilized people is that they oppose savagery and do not tolerate it. And to oppose it, they must speak truthfully about it. So let's forget about the superficial contemporary "civility" that never calls unpleasant and dangerous things by their proper names, and so allows aliens, enemies, and savages to take over. Instead of practicing such "civility," let us stand for civilization.

Are we witnessing some lurching here in Australia?

Andrews releases 'evidence'

Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews has released a summary of allegations against African migrants which he says contributed to his decision to slash the number of refugees Australia accepts from the region ...

"Concerns about the establishment of race-based gangs, reports of altercations between African groups in nightclubs and at community functions, disagreements among prominent African community organisations over accusations that some are receiving favoured treatment in accessing community services," he said...

"Tensions have arisen between some African families involving conflict and assault, concern among some community leaders as to the increase in crime among some African youths, and reports of a developing trend of young African males congregating in parks at night, often to consume alcohol." ...

Door 'shut but not locked' to Africans

Mr Andrews said pretending there was no problem was not going to help the refugees.

He said many of the refugees were young men in their teens and 20s who had an education level equivalent to grades two or three in primary school.

"Many of them have spent up to a decade in refugee camps and much of their lives in war-torn situations, then they have to settle in a country with a culture vastly different from where they came from," Mr Andrews said.

Immigration Minister 'racist': Bligh

Premier Anna Bligh has launched a scathing attack on Federal Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews, describing his comments about the Sudanese community as "racist" and as coming from the "deep south of America in the 1950s" ...

"It has been a long time since I have heard such a pure form of racism out of the mouth of any Australian politician. For it to come to come from the Immigration Minister is particularly disturbing ...

"Kevin Andrews' comments are basically making a judgment about the character of people on the basis of their race," Ms Bligh said.

"There is no more pure form of racism. And to have it come out of the mouth of the federal Immigration Minister of this country is something that I think Australians will see for what it is ..."

Will Australia become host to black savagery if we fail speak with total frankness?

Rapist jailed for 24 years

A young rapist who attacked a 63-year-old woman and three teenagers in three days has been jailed for 24 years.

Hakeem Hakeem, 21, the father of a two-year-old boy, blinked, but showed no emotion when Justice Murray Kellam imposed sentence...

The day before his last attack, Hakeem imprisoned, punched, slashed and raped the woman in her home, saying "Sorry Mum" to her before fleeing...

Hakeem was found guilty of raping and falsely imprisoning a girl 16, who was attacked in a scout hall at Dandenong on March 10, 2005...

Justice Kellam said the crimes, which he described as horrific, violent and debauched, took place about a month after Hakeem arrived in Australia as a refugee from Sudan.

Afghan journalist sentenced to death for blasphemy

An Afghan court on Tuesday sentenced a 23-year-old journalism student to death for distributing a paper he printed off the Internet that three judges said violated the tenets of Islam, an official said.

The three-judge panel sentenced Sayad Parwez Kambaksh to death for distributing a paper that humiliated Islam ...

Kambaksh had been sentenced to death under Article 130 of the Afghan constitution. That article says that if no law exists regarding an issue than a court's decision should be in accord with Hanafi jurisprudence.

Hanafi is an orthodox school of Sunni Muslim jurisprudence followed in southern and central Asia ...

Clerics in Balkh and Kunduz province arranged a demonstration in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif last week against Kambaksh, calling on the government not to release him....

Death penalty call for man who spread Koran translation

An Afghan journalist accused of distributing an unacceptable translation of the Koran should be put to death, says former Prime Minister Ahmad Shah Ahmadzai. Former journalist Ghows Zalmay, who was also the spokesman for Afghanistan's Attorney-General, was arrested in November last year for distributing a translation of the Koran into Dari, one of Afghanistan's two official languages. Ahmadzai, who ran in the 2004 presidential election against current President Hamid Karzai, told Adnkronos International (AKI) he supported the death penalty for Zalmay. "Today Afghanistan is full of vices. Several Afghan restaurants serve liquor, despite it being illegal and on top of it, such material is distributed," Ahmadzai told AKI. "I am in favour of his death."

The Afghan Christian: Freed but Not Free

Abdul Rahman and others like him still face the possibility of being charged with apostasy for converting out of Islam, an offense that carries a penalty of death unless they renounce their new faith. While Afghanistan's constitution embraces international human rights conventions that guarantee freedom of worship, it also codifies the role of Islamic Sharia law — under which Abdul Rahman was charged. And even while Washington ... urged Kabul to drop the charges, public opinion on the streets of Afghanistan ... showed strong support for legal action against the convert ...

But it was not in recognition of "universal values" that Abdul Rahman was released. Instead, authorities cited insufficient evidence, insinuations about his mental state and even questions raised by the authorities over his citizenship. The legal basis for charging someone for converting from Islam to Christianity has not, thus far, been altered — the political conflict that from having U.S. troops trying to protect a government that can't guarantee the right of its citizens to choose the same faith as the President of the United States has simply been kicked down the road ... Not surprisingly, there is speculation that Abdul Rahman may leave Afghanistan once he's out of jail.

Teacher shot dead after speech condemning suicide bombings

A teacher was shot to death in northern Afghanistan after he gave a speech condemning suicide bombings, officials said Wednesday.

Abdul Hadi criticized such attacks as un-Islamic and un-Afghan during a speech Tuesday in the Archi district of Kunduz province, said Khair Mohammad Subat, the provincial education department director.

Hadi spoke at a gathering of about 700 people, including the Kunduz governor, and was on his way home when he was killed, Subat said....

British troops could be in Afghanistan for decades

British troops could be in Afghanistan for decades, the country's Defence Secretary Des Browne said in comments published Sunday.

... Browne said: "We cannot risk it again becoming an ungoverned training haven for terrorists who threaten the UK.

"But there is only so much our forces can achieve. The job can only be completed by the international community working with the Afghan government and its army.

"It is a commitment which could last decades, although it will reduce over time."

Browne's comments echo those of the head of the army, senior figures in the security services and former prime minister Tony Blair that the battle against Islamist extremism could last a generation.

Our moral dilemma in Afghanistan that we never discuss

Should we be helping sustain a society and government the fundamental laws and customs of which require the execution of people for distributing a negative opinion about Muhammad? Obviously not, since to do so is not only wrong in itself but means supporting a religious system that seeks to subdue us to the same law. What then should we do? Obviously we do not have the ability to modernize or democratize a society ruled by a religion that executes people for expressing opinions. Nor do we have the ability to destroy that religion, short of destroying the country and killing most of its people. Nor do we have the ability to assimilate the followers of such a tyrannical religion into our society and into any international order that recognizes basic human rights and liberties. What then can we do? We should withdraw our forces from that country, and end our connection with that country, while promising that if a regime, such as the Taliban, comes to power there that threatens us, we will return and destroy it. (Or alternatively we should wage a standalone war of extermination against the Taliban, without connecting that war with support for the existing sharia government.) As I've said over and over, a three week war once every ten years will be infinitely less costly to us than permanent occupation. Other than that, we have no interest in the internal affairs of Afghanistan. We cannot, in the name of democracy, be propping up an Islamic sharia regime which executes people for questioning Islam.

This fundamental contradiction in our present policy is never discussed, and so we continue in our absurd and self-debasing course of "defending democracy" in a sharia country.

What President Bush should say to us

It ... must become a part of our national will, to ensure that Islamic law does not come to our own shores, whether by means of violent jihad terrorism ... or through peaceful patterns of migration, such as those that have already Islamized large parts of Europe ...

Rather than continuing to emphasize the democratization of the Muslim Middle East as our key tool in the war on terror, I will henceforth emphasize the prevention of sharia from reaching the West as our key tool in the war on terror ...

... unregulated immigration of peoples from "sharia states" ... If such an influx continues, Islamic law will be accommodated, adopted and even legislated, at least in some jurisdictions, according to majority will. We know this to be true because such a "sharia shift" is already transforming what sociologists call post-Christian Europe into an increasingly Islamic sphere. If we do not want to see such changes here, we must act. Accordingly, I am asking Congress to amend our laws to bar further Islamic immigration, beginning with immigration from sharia states.

A commitment which could last decades, or an absurd and self-debasing course?

The 751 No-Go Zones of France

They go by the euphemistic term Zones Urbaines Sensibles, or Sensitive Urban Zones, with the even more antiseptic acronym ZUS, and there are 751 of them as of last count. They are convienently listed on one long webpage, complete with street demarcations and map delineations.

What are they? Those places in France that the French state does not control. They range from two zones in the medieval town of Carcassone to twelve in the heavily Muslim town of Marseilles, with hardly a town in France lacking in its ZUS. The ZUS came into existence in late 1996 and according to a 2004 estimate, nearly 5 million people live in them ...

A more precise name for these zones would be Dar al-Islam, the place where Muslims rule ...

Bishop warns of no-go zones for non-Muslims

Islamic extremists have created "no-go" areas across Britain where it is too dangerous for non-Muslims to enter, one of the Church of England's most senior bishops warns today.

The Rt Rev Michael Nazir-Ali, the Bishop of Rochester and the Church's only Asian bishop, says that people of a different race or faith face physical attack if they live or work in communities dominated by a strict Muslim ideology ...

His comments come as a poll of the General Synod - the Church's parliament - shows that its senior leaders, including bishops, also believe that Britain is being damaged by large-scale immigration.

Bishop Nazir-Ali, who was born in Pakistan, gives warning that attempts are being made to give Britain an increasingly Islamic character by introducing the call to prayer and wider use of sharia law, a legal system based on the Koran.

Why the Bishop of Rochester is right about 'no-go' areas

His statement about the dangers of the rise of radical Islam matches the reality of what people see in our cities and towns, where the influence of hardliners is undermining harmony and promoting segregation ...

It is not good enough just to dismiss his opinions and hope that the whole issue will go away, for the failure to achieve real integration in our society is far too serious an issue to be ignored ...

... the determination of some of my fellow Muslims to cling to certain lifestyles, customs, languages and practices has helped to create neighbourhoods where non-Muslims may feel uncomfortable, even intimidated.

Such anxieties can only be reinforced by the dominant influence of the mosques, which are often in the hands of fundamentalists and thereby promote a conscious rejection of Western values ...

The heavy Islamic influence in parts of Britain amounts to a severe indictment of the dogma of multi-culturalism, which held sway in our public institutions since the early eighties.

Instead of promoting a sense of mutual belonging and shared understanding, this doctrine has sown the seeds of division and suspicion by discouraging allegiance to a unified British identity ...

Multi-culturalism has backfired spectacularly.

Christian preachers face arrest in Birmingham

A police community support officer ordered two Christian preachers to stop handing out gospel leaflets in a predominantly Muslim area of Birmingham.

The evangelists say they were threatened with arrest for committing a "hate crime" and were told they risked being beaten up if they returned. The incident will fuel fears that "no-go areas" for Christians are emerging in British towns and cities ...

Mr Abraham said: "I couldn't believe this was happening in Britain. The Bishop of Rochester was criticised by the Church of England recently when he said there were no-go areas in Britain but he was right; there are certainly no-go areas for Christians who want to share the gospel."

But don't worry, it won't happen in Australia ...

Noble Park in lockdown

Noble Park ... has been besieged this year by North African delinquents committing assaults, street robberies and armed robberies.

Residents and retailers from the main shopping precinct were living in fear ...

Local businesswoman Joy Swanson says Noble Park had turned into a "ghetto" before the police moved in.

"It's really sad someone had to die for something to be done," Mrs Swanson said.

"The local police were doing all they could but the council were doing nothing. They wouldn't admit there was a problem." ...

Mrs Swanson, a long-term Noble Park resident and businesswoman, knows first-hand of the grief -- she and her husband have both fallen victim to the gangs.

"My husband was bashed in January while getting off the train. He was coming home from work. He was wearing his suit and carrying his briefcase. He was minding his own business. He heard swearing, turned around and they asked, 'What are you looking at?' "

Mr Swanson was punched and knocked unconscious.

"That was one of many incidents," Mrs Swanson says. "There's graffiti etched into the glass windows (of the shops). My car was broken into. Everybody's cars were broken into many times. We started closing the shop at five o'clock. A lot of the shopkeepers wouldn't go to their cars after dark. Police said, 'Don't ever walk through (nearby) Copas Park under any circumstances.'"

Excerpt from interview with three-year-old Egyptian girl, Basmallah, on Iqra TV in 2002.

Amer: Basmallah, do you know the Jews?
Basmallah: Yes
Amer: Do you like them?
Basmallah: No.
Amer: Why don't you like them?
Basmallah: Because.
Amer: Because they are what?
Basmallah: They are apes and pigs.
Amer: Because they are apes and pigs. Who said that about them?
Basmallah: Our God.
Amer: Where did he say that about them?
Basmallah: In the Koran.

M1: So are your folks gonna get cable TV?

M2: [shakes head] You're a dinosaur, man. Radicals are yesterday's heroes. Brother Tariq says we should just be a witness for Islam and that's enough.

M1: So you'll just get married, have kids and settle down?

M2: Yeah

M1: How many wives?

M2: Four, of course, if I can provide.

[M1 and M2 burst into simultaneous laughter.] Hahahahahaha!

M1: Ah, yes there will be a lot of "providing". How many kids?

M2: Well Abdul Raheem Green says we can outbreed the Westerners if we have lots of babies, so I'm thinkin 10 or 12 each wife.

M1: [pauses] Radical.

It's us who pay

UNEMPLOYED scrounger Mohammed Salim is getting the state to pay for him, his wife and their ELEVEN kids—because he can't be bothered to go to work.

He quit his £27,000 job teaching maths and science three years ago and is BETTER OFF claiming £29,096 a year in benefits.

And he has much more time to devote to his Islamic political party— which ATTACKS the British government, even though this country gives his family their food, clothes and house for free.

Mohammed is also busy planning his TWELFTH baby with wife Noreen, 35, but has no plans to get a job.
